THRoW:
Next week, the THRoW homework will be a factual paragraph.  I have already given campers a chance to start researching a famous person or an interesting animal for next week.

TASK:  Write a Factual Paragraph
Include a topic sentence that introduces the person/animal without giving an specific details.
Add 3 - 4 relevant and interesting facts about that person /animal.
End with a strong closing sentence.

Paragraphs may be hand written or completed in Google Classroom and printed to be put into their THRoW books.  I am fine with both.  Students are allowed to copy the factual information from a text, however, they must write a strong and detailed topic sentence and closing sentence of their own.  Also, feel free to include a photograph or image of the topic researched at the bottom of the page.Please make sure your child understands the language/vocabulary that he/she includes in the paragraph. As usual, THRoW will be due Friday.

I have added a Modelled example of a famous person (Louis Braille) and also one of an interesting animal (Whale Shark) in your child's THRoW to demonstrate how a factual paragraph might look.

And here we are at the end of a very short week already!

Reminder - no school this Friday, so tomorrow we will have our Language Quiz on adjectives (words that describe nouns) and our WOW test.  Also, those who wish to perform this week's poem Icky Bugs will be entering the Poetry read off!  Good luck to everyone!

Reminder: tomorrow is Rock Your Socks Day in support of World Down Syndrome Day!  We are asking students to wear fun and funky socks tomorrow to help emphasize the individuality and different characteristics each child or person with Down syndrome brings to our world. Each child is born different and those differences need to be acknowledged and celebrated.  So, get out those crazy socks and wear them proudly tomorrow!

Next week, Miss Holland takes over and delivers instruction in Language, Social Studies, Religion and Visual Arts.  We are all very excited to learn from her indeed!

Math Test:  Tuesday next week we will wrap up our brief unit on Multiplication and Division.  Students are trying to learn up to their 11 times tables (although in grade 3 the expectation is up to x 7 tables).  If your child is unable to count swiftly and efficiently by 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s, 10s, 11s please practise at home. I will send home the Math duo tangs for review Monday night and offer them to go home this weekend for those interested as well.

Students are expected to be able to...

• Relate addition to multiplication and subtraction to division.                   Ex. 3 x 4 is the same as adding 3 groups of 4 together 4+4+4.
• Represent a multiplication sentence in an array or by using groups          Ex.   5 x 3  can be represented as this array to the right:

Welcome back parents and campers! 

Today was a great start back from March break!  I hope everyone is rested and ready to get back down to work!

             I would like to introduce our newest visitor to Camp Wilson - Miss Holland an amazing and dynamic teacher in training from the Faculty of Education!  We look forward to learning from you!

Also, this week, there is no THRoW as this is a short week and students will have enough on their plates with daily homework in Math and Language.

As we continue our journey in Lent, please have frequent check ins with your child on how well they are keeping their Lenten promises.  We have all committed to three areas in Lent;  Prayer - we recite a special Lenten Prayer together as a camp daily, Fasting - we have all decided to give up something we really enjoy and finally Charity - we have made a promise to DO something positive for someone else.  It's important to remember that a promise takes commitment and self-control.  Keep trying each and everyday!

Happy March Break!

Dear Parents and Campers,

     Well, we DID it!  We all made it to March break!  Can you believe there are only 69 days left in GRADE THREE!  Unbelievable!

So, I have collected the THRoWs and will have them back for you in a week!  Things are shaping up nicely around Camp Wilson - I'm happy to report!

     I only have one ongoing concern.... regular, full day attendance.  I have had many students leaving early over the past couple of months which makes it difficult to teach.  Please try to keep your child's absence limited to appointment or sickness.  Also, please do me the courtesy of letting me know if you are taking your child out of my class by writing me a note that includes the time and reason in your child's agenda.  Thank you in advance.  We have a great deal of information to cover before the end of the school, so you cooperation is GREATLY appreciated.

      I would like to wish you ALL a happy, healthy and relaxing March Break!  I hope you enjoy your family time and I look forward to seeing you all in a week refreshed and ready to learn!

Dear Parents and Campers,

       Well, it's been a very busy day... I am sorry to say that I will not be giving the language quiz this week.  We are far too busy in our current Math work.  I will have to try again when we come back from March break.  I would like students to focus on Math, THRoW and WOW test for the week.  To add the language quiz I feel would be too much.
       Also, we have a Math test scheduled for tomorrow, but I also have many concerns about the number of errors that are still in students' books that should have been corrected.  I used my Math review time today to allow students time to make some of those corrections, however, there are still some to be done tonight. 
Keep in mind, this week is crazy with rewards for our fundraising lottery.  So, today was slipper day but some students forgot.  They can wear slippers tomorrow.  Tuesday is Crazy Hair Day, Wednesday is Electronics Day and Friday is Hat Day.

That being said, the best way to support me from home is to ensure your child is reviewing and making corrections each night when needed.  I've explained to students that the responsibility fall on them to finish any incomplete work each day by taking home their needed duo tangs.  I am already much further behind than I should be in Math.  Any support would be greatly appreciated.

We postponed our language quiz as many students did not take home their language duo tangs and much of the work was incomplete.  Instead, the language quiz will be on Wednesday of next week.

Speaking of next week, it is important for all healthy students to attend as usual for this last week before March break.  I am teaching and the week is an important one as I am assessing our current unit in Math on Tuesday.  I will send home the Math duo tangs this weekend as well as on Monday for your child to review. 
MATH REVIEW:

• extend a numeric pattern
• identify the core of a growing, shrinking or repeating pattern with one, two or three attributes
• complete a partially completed table showing growing patterns
• extend a geometric pattern and describe it
• solve missing numbers in equations

HOW TO HELP  MY CHILD SOLVE MISSING NUMBERS IN EQUATIONS:


Ex.   15 - __ = 3 + 7

THINK: 
Which side of the equal sign am I able to solve? (3 + 7 because I know both numbers).
Then solve the one side and rewrite the math sentence.

            15 - __ =  10

Then ask your self which operation is being used addition or subtraction?  (Subtraction)
So what makes sense to do with the two known, remaining numbers?  (subtract because adding them would make a number greater than 15 and that's not possible if the beginning number of a subtraction sentence always begins with the largest number).

               15 - 10 - 5, 

So then I know that...
           15 - 5 = 10

I teach to get the math sentence simplified down to 3 numbers before solving.  That means, you must solve one side of the equation when possible.
