Wednesday, Camp Wilson is hosting a spooky Halloween FEAR FACTOR event! You have probably heard by now, we are using foods from our 4 Healthy Food Groups to create the effect of horrifying body parts in a "Walk-through-put-your-hand-in-and-feel" activity! Many classes in our school ask to participate in the walk through, it's super fun!
Here's what we are using ...
cauliflower - preserved brains
big, round grapes - ripped out eyeballs
dried appricots - chopped off ears
cooked spaghetti in oil - guts
pumpkin seeds - ripped off fingernails
cooked hot dog - chopped off finger
frozen, water-filled latex glove - clammy hand
HOW CAN YOU HELP? I have asked students to volunteer to help out in bringing in food items for our FEAR FACTOR. Please sign up in your child's agenda for an item. I will check it Tuesday and know what is left for me to bring on Wednesday. THANK YOU in advance for your help! Thank you for participating! There will be a few students bringing in the same items in case anyone forgets! I will be sure to take MANY pictures!

Welcome back to a new SHORT week! Yes, this week is only 4 days because Friday is a PD Day so NO SCHOOL for students! Yay!
What you need to know for this week...
NEW HOMEWORK: THRoW (Take Home Reading or Writing)
Students have been learning about how to differentiate between 2 genres of text: Fiction and Non Fiction. On Mondays, I will be sending home either a reading or writing task that will be due at the end of that week on Friday. Students who fail to hand in the homework on Friday morning, will be staying in a recess to do. That goes for all excuses such as I did it, but I left it on my bed... So, tonight we will start with a Take Home Reading assignment. Students are to read the story (either independently or with assistance) and follow my example of either a Modelled Fiction or Modelled Non Fiction THRoW. I expect students to follow my example EXACTLY as shown. Title - underlined with red pen and RULER. See the example in the front of your THRoW duo tang for specifics. I will help them get started for this first one Monday during the day, but please check in on your child by mid week to ensure they have started it. I suggest working on it for a little bit each night so that it's not too much at once. Parents are encouraged to assist when needed.
DELAY IN BLOG:
It seems that each year, some parents let me know that my posts have a 24 hour delay some days. I have contacted the support team at Blogger to remedy this situation, but they seem to always blame it on the internet connection of each user. So, as a loop hole to this, if you check my blog on the computer, it seems to be instantly updated. You can either go to campwilson2018-2019.blogspot.com or go through our school website to my class. This should help you get the most recent if your are not getting updated in a timely fashion.
THANK YOU to the parents who have already sent in canned foods for our Cans for a Cause Event later next month!
SCIENCE TEST:
This Thursday, we will be having our end-of-the-unit Science test on Stability and Structures. I will be sending home your child's Science duo tang for review. We will also be having a review on Wednesday in class. Focus on these points:
- List 5 structures and the load they hold
- Explain if a structure is a structure by using our definition on page one.
- Identify why one structure is more stable than another (if it's shorter, wider base, more weight at the base)
- Name structures that are both animal made and person made with the same funtions
- Describe properties of materials Ex. steel - strong, inflexible
- Name and describe the 3 Construction Techniques that when applied to materials make them stronger and more stable
- Be able to identify which construction technique has been applied to various structures
- Explain in a short answer whether they think structures have a positive or negative impact on our environment using Science vocabulary
- Identify 2-3 famous structures
This will be an AMAZING review if you focus on the above points. Happy reviewing!

* Please see post before this one for information regarding First Communion / First Reconciliation.
Dear Parents and Campers,
Tonight students are coming home with their second Math test for our first unit of math in Number Sense and Numeration. These 2 marks will be averaged out for a final report card grade. I will put the final grade on top of the test coming home tonight. It will appear Ex. "Overall NSN: L3". Please go over the test with your child tonight and correct the errors using a pen. I am going to go over the test today as well.
Here are what the levels indicate...
R: Student did not achieve a passing grade (similar to an F).
L1: Student demonstrated limited knowledge (similar to a D).
L2: Student demonstrated some knowledge (similar to a C).
L3: Student demonstrated consistent knowledge (similar to a B).
L4: Student demonstrated thorough knowledge (similar to an A).
Every year, the grade 3 classes participate in a canned food drive in support of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. AM 800 hosts an event called Cans for a Cause each year at the Devonshire Mall Food Court. As a kick off to our GIVING Advent Season, students are challenged to collect as many cans as possible over a 2 week period. Then, we pack our back packs with 9-10 cans each and walk the cans down to the mall where we unpack and donate our cans to the cause. It's a great way to start our Christmas season by helping those in need!
This event is usually in December, however, our school is also collecting cans for the same charity beginning next week. Since this is too early to start collecting, we will hold on to any cans you might send in now until our scheduled walk to the mall. I am waiting on the date of this year's AM 800 Cans for a Cause event... Stay tuned!

Parents and Campers,
This week we will be modelling the new homework that will be going home beginning next week. It will either be a reading response or a writing task the next. It will depend on what we are currently learning in language. For now, review Math and enjoy the homework as it has been since the beginning of the year; complete what you haven't finished in class.

Reading: Making Connections: Text to Self: We are learning how to extend our understanding of texts by connecting the ideas in them to our own knowledge and experience, to other familiar texts, and to the world around us. We are reading and analyzing a variety of texts both fiction and non-fiction in small guided reading groups. Finally, we are identifying the key features of Fiction (Character, Setting Problem and Solution) and Non-Fiction (Facts and information, subtitles, index, glossary, subtitles, photographs, etc).
Writing: We are learning about writing the 4 types of sentences: Statements (Declarative), Commands (Imperative), Questions (Interrogative) and Exclamatory. Also, we have covered nouns both proper and common. Students are expected to be able to identify, write and correctly punctuate each of those types of sentences and use it in their daily writing.
Math: Number Sense and Numeration
Religion: We are learning about the Holy Spirit and developing an understanding of the three parts that make up God; The father, Son and Holy Spirit. Also, we will be learning about the fruits of the Holy Spirit; Love, Joy, Peace, Kindness, Patience, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control and how we can put these fruits into action in our daily lives. We will also learn about the 4 main parts of a mass and how to prepare for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.
Social Studies: First Nations and Early Settlers: Student will compare ways of life among some specific groups in Canada around the beginning of the nineteenth century, and describe some of the changes between that era and the present day. Students will investigate some of the major challenges that different groups and communities faced in Canada from around 1780 to 1850, and key measures taken to address these challenges.
I will continue to add new information as we learn it to keep you posted of our daily learning. I hope this helps you initiate some great conversations with your child now that you can ask specific questions about the above learning goals!
