SOCIAL STUDIES HOMEWORK THIS WEEKEND:
Yes, but if it's any consolation, this will be the last of the homework for this year other than maybe practising the recorder and rehearsing for our Poetry Cafe!

Social Studies:  Your child is coming home with his/her Social Studies duo tang.  They have completed a rough outline of the oral presentation they will be presenting on Monday or Tuesday.  Please have them practise this at home on the weekend.  They must be able to answer questions about our unit.  Encourage standing tall, eye contact with audience, loud, clear voice that uses expression and detailed facts and information.

Reading Challenge - I am still hopeful for many more campers to join my 3000 minutes of reading club by June 20th.  Please make sure all students return my black pouches and any and all books they may have borrowed and 'left' at home so I can replenish my library.  Thank you in advance!

Have a terrific weekend!

SECRET QUESTION:  What type of soil is BEST for planting?

Wednesday, May 29, 2019

Congratulations Campers, we are OFFICIALLY finished EQAO!!!  I am very proud of YOU the parents, for making sure your child was here each day on time, well rested and ready to show off their learning!  No one was absent, we had perfect attendance!  Well done!

SOCIAL STUDIES:
Note:  Campers voted to do a presentation in lieu of a formal written test in Social Studies. Next week, students will be doing mini-presentations on one or more than one aspect of their learning  on First Nations and Early Settlers.  Students are asked to present their learning in the form of a short oral presentation about something they learned in this unit.  I will assess them on the information they present and their ability to answer questions that I may ask at the end of their presentation.  This mark will be averaged with their first mark given by Miss Holland earlier int he unit for an overall mark.  Non-track participating students will do theirs on Monday, track students will do theirs on Tuesday.  It is to be at least 1 minute in length.  Use the green social studies duo tang to prepare.  Cue cards allowed.

Great day again today for our Campers!  They knocked it out of the park!  The Math portion of EQAO is now completed!  Tomorrow, we move on to Language Book C!  Keep up the great job, parents, of getting your child here on time and well rested!  It's paying off!

Tonight:  By tonight, you should have received a personalized invitation to our Poetry Cafe!  I am sending another bright orange sheet as well for you to complete and return hopefully by the end of this week.  I need to know how many poetry lovers will be attending and who can contribute to our treat table!  Thank you in advance!  Just cut off the bottom portion and return it with your child in his/her agenda.  Can't wait to see who is coming!

Soil:  Thank you to those parents who have already sent in a bag of soil!  Please remember to put it in a large ziplock bag and label it with your child's name.  I'm hoping to begin this unit as soon as all of the samples are brought in!  Can't wait to get dirty!

That's all for now!

Poetry Cafe Invitation

Back by popular demand...
POETRY CAFE!
Yes, this amazing group of campers has blown my mind with their poetry performances, so much so that I have agreed to embark upon our second annual POETRY CAFE performance for you, the parents/grandparents!  Monday afternoon, your child should deliver to you an invitation that has been personally made for you for this very special event!  We have been working very hard since January learning all about the elements of poetry, and now here is our chance to showcase our talent!  There will be an option for those who are willing and able to bring in treats to share after the performance.  No pressure for those who cannot commit to this!  Once I have the final count, I will be able to help as well where there may be gaps, so no worries! Please cut off and return the bottom portion of the invitation so I can start planning!

WHERE: St. Christopher School, Cabin 119

WHEN: Thursday, June 20 at 2:00 p.m.
(Yes, you can take your child home afterwards)

WHO: Parents/Grandparents
(Please make alternative arrangements for younger siblings so as to avoid disruptions during the performance - thank you!)

WHAT: Poetry reading by YOURS TRULY!

WHY: To Celebrate the “Art of Poetry”!

Hope you can make arrangements to be here, it's an event you WON'T want to miss!

SECRET QUESTION: Name one element of poetry.

SCIENCE:
NEEDED:  SOIL SAMPLES!
I have asked the grade 3s to bring in a bag of soil to investigate as a launch to our new science unit on Plants & Soils.  All kinds of soil are encouraged with all of the living and non-living things you might find in it (crawlers, twigs, bugs, etc) to make it more interesting!  Those who wish to bring in more, are welcome to do so, as long at they have permission to dig by parents! If you don't have access to soil from the ground, potted soil can work, too. Please send in this soil sample as soon as possible.  Put in a large zip lock bag labelled with your child's name on it.  Our investigation will take place early next week so that we can begin our unit launch!  Thank you!

READING CHALLENGE UPDATE...

It is with a very heavy heart, that I announce that only 5 students so far have met the 3000 minute reading challenge in Grade 3!  That means that students have not been reading throughout the year for 15 minutes a night as promised back in September!  However, there still is time for those who are approaching this goal!

As explained to all of my campers in September...

ONLY those students who meet this goal will be treated to a lunch with yours truly.
NO TEARS from those who did not put in the time and effort to achieve this reward.
It was an attainable goal for all, so no excuses!

Deadline for this challenge is June 20th, I hope to be able to treat many more campers to a delicious lunch, so get reading!

See everyone on Tuesday - long weekend this weekend with Victoria Day on Monday!

Swim to Survive is officially over!

Campers will be receiving their certificates tonight in their agendas stating whether or not they MET or DID NOT MEET the Swim to Survive Standard.  If your child did not meet the standard, you are strongly encouraged to enrol your child in life saving swimming lessons for his/her own safety.

One of the reasons why your child may have achieved a DID NOT MEET assessment, could be that he/she touched or held on to the side or ropes at some point during the roll in, treading water and 50 meter swim.

It was nice to see my campers outside the classroom in such an engaging activity!

SECRET QUESTION:  What is our strategy to remember AREA?  (Hint, we think about the name of a cookie that has the best inside part!)  This helps us to remember that AreA is the measure of the INSIDE of a shape.  This cookie with the delicious insides has almost the same spelling, just one letter is changed!

Ok, Happy Monday Everyone!

This week...

Image result for images of probability
Instead of THRoW this week and next, students will have Math homework each day instead.  We are beginning 2 new units in Math beginning Monday.  I will be using 2 separate periods to teach each unit. We will be learning about Measurement - Linear, Area and Perimeter as well as Probability - the chance of an event occurring.  We are running behind in our Math Program so to make up some time I will be teaching these two units in tandem.  Therefore, you might see Probability for homework one night, and Measurement another. I want my entire math program to be completed by the time students write EQAO at the end of this month.
