Parents,
Sorry! I forgot to put the Prediction assessment in your child's agenda today! I'll be sure to do so tomorrow!
I also added the 'Follow' button to the right to see how many followers I have for my blog! Click if you follow my blog!

SECRET QUESTION: What is 29 + 31? (Use your mental math strategies by taking one away from one number, to give to the other to make friendlier numbers to add!)
Language Quiz tomorrow will be focused on RETELLING. See anchor chart to the right. It is almost the same as predicting, except, now students KNOW because they read the text. The retell will be done on the same text used for Predicting.
Students are expected to follow our posted anchor chart in giving a detailed and thorough retell.
I will be sending home the assessments for PREDICTING to be signed tonight, however, they won't make much sense to you as I wrote down anecdotal notes for myself as they were predicting. I tried to include some bump up strategies for improvement.

SECRET QUESTION: What math symbol can be used to show that 49 is greater than 13? Write the math sentence.

It's time to kick off the beginning of our Advent season NEXT WEEK with our annual
AM 800 Cans for a Cause!
The competition is ON! Camp Wilson is trying to raise more cans than 3D before next Friday. We will carry all of the cans in our backpacks and walk them down to Devonshire Mall to drop off for the St. Vincent De Paul Society which will be set up in front the old Sears entrance to the mall. Any parents wishing to join us on our walk are welcome to come along. So, start sending in any non-perishables or can goods starting today. The final day to bring in cans is Friday, December 7th (the day of our walk).
What better way to begin the Advent season than by giving to those who are less fortunate than ourselves! Any donations of cans is very appreciated! Our goal is to raise 200 cans per class!
WE CAN DO IT!
Thank you parents for supporting this great cause - and thank you to those who have already donated a few weeks ago - we still have those cans!

Good Morning Parents and Campers!
This week...
READING: - I will continue meeting one-to-one with students to complete our oral quiz on Predicting (we didn't get through everyone last Friday). This Friday, our oral language quiz will be on Retelling. See anchor Chart to the right. You will notice that Retelling is almost exactly like Predicting, except when retelling, we have read the book and now KNOW what the book was about. In Predicting, we were guessing what the book might be about from the clues in the title, illustrations, etc.
WRITING: We are now learning about how to write a letter using these features:
1. Heading (Date)
2. Salutation or Greeting
3. Indent (space before first sentence)
4. Body
5. Closing
6. Signature
7. P.S. (Optional but encouraged)
THRoW - Everyone has done a terrific job of identifying the features of Fiction and Non-Fiction in a variety of texts. Now that we have had the chance to complete 2 Fiction texts and 2 Non-Fiction texts, we will move on to letter writing. So, this week's THRoW is a letter to yours truly - ME! Campers are to write me a letter using proper letter format. I will be writing back to EACH STUDENT based on their questions to me in their letters. So, ask some good questions and I'll write back some great answers! Can't wait to see what you write!
MATH: This unit on MEASUREMENT is broken down into three mini-units; Reading a Calendar, Telling Time and Temperature in Degrees Celsius.
We just finished reading a calendar and how we have begun learning how to tell time.
Gr. 1 - students learned how to tell time to the hour and half hour. Gr. 2 - students tell time to the quarter hour (quarter to and quarter after)
Gr. 3 - students tell time to five minute intervals.
Please practise telling time with your child on a regular basis. This is a skill that is required life long and needs to be learned. Telling time on an analog AND digital clock is required.
READING CHALLENGE: I am meeting occasionally with each students to check on their reading challenge progress. If students are reading on a daily basis Monday through Friday for fifteen minutes a night, they will easily reach their goal. Please insist your child dedicate 15 minutes of reading a night. Believe it or not, I have a few very dedicated readers who have already reached the goal of reading 3000 minutes before the end of the grade 3! Now, THAT'S dedication!
That's about all a Monday brain can take for a day....

Hello Parents and Campers,
This week's language quiz will be an oral test on how well your child can make a prediction. We have a classroom posted anchor chart, as shown to the right, that they are allowed to reference during their prediction.
To review, you can use any fiction book from home or in your child's take home reading pouch to practise making a prediction.

Welcome back to a FULL week of school!
Math: Monday, you will receive your child's unit test to review, sign and return. We now begin a unit in Measurement: Calendar / Time / Temperature.
- solve problems involving the relationships between minutes and hours, hours and days, days and weeks, and weeks and years, using a variety of tools
- read time using analogue clocks, to the nearest five minutes, and using digital clocks (e.g., 1:23 means twenty-three minutes after one o’clock), and represent time in 12-hour notation
- estimate, read (i.e., using a thermometer), and record positive temperatures to the nearest degree Celsius (i.e., using a number line; using appropriate notation) (Sample problem: Record the temperature outside each day using a thermometer, and compare your measurements with those reported in the daily news.)
- identify benchmarks for freezing, cold, cool, warm, hot, and boiling temperatures as they relate to water and for cold, cool, warm, and hot temperatures as they relate to air (e.g., water freezes at 0°C; the air temperature on a warm day is about 20°C, but water at 20°C feels cool)
Social Studies: We have begun a new unit on Living and Working in Ontario. We will be learning to ...
- describe some major connections between features of the natural environment of a region and the type of land use and/or the type of community that is established in that region
- describe some major connections between features of the natural environment and the type of employment that is available in a region, with reference to two or more municipal regions in Ontario
- 3 identify and describe some of the main patterns in population distribution and land use in two or more municipal regions in Ontario, using mapping and globe skills
- gather and organize a variety of data and information on the environmental effects of different land and/or resource use and measures taken to reduce the negative impact of that use
- formulate questions to guide investigations into some of the short- and/or long-term effects on the environment of different types of land and/or resource use in two or more municipal regions of Ontario
- compare some aspects of land use in two or more municipalities
- construct print and/or digital maps that show some different land uses, landform regions, and/or municipalities in Ontario, using appropriate elements of a map, including standard units of measurement
THRoW:
I gave some constructive feedback to each THRoW so that bump up strategies can be applied. Please go over these suggestions with your child BEFORE beginning this week's THRoW.

Parent Teacher Interviews: This week, parents have the opportunity to meet with teachers on Wednesday, November 14th from 4:00 - 7:00 pm. I have spoken with many of you already, however, if you would like to come in a touch base even though I checked off the box 'teacher does not require an interview at this time', please feel free to request one and I'll schedule you in! Bring your specific questions and concerns as we only have approximately 10 minutes per interview.
Looking forward to seeing you Thursday! I'll send you a confirmed time in your child's agenda. Be sure to sign so that I know you will be coming.
