Image result for images of children cheering clip artHappy Monday Parents and Campers!

I wanted to take this opportunity to welcome Joy Hakim to our camp!  She arrived to us earlier this month and we are very excited to have her join our camp!

This week:

NO THROW - stop cheering campers...lol!

Monday - Review Math  for a quiz on Tuesday on 2D shapes. Students should be able to describe a polygon by its name, the number of sides, number of vertices, number of equal sides, number of parallel sides,  and finally, number and type of angles.  The quiz will be to describe and label a shape according to its attributes.

Tuesday - Quiz on describing 2D shapes.

Wednesday - Review Capacity.

Thursday - Quiz on Capacity. This assessment will be factored in with their previous mark in measurement on Time/Calendar/Temperature.  Some students struggled in this unit, so hopefully this quiz will help bump up their mark a bit!

I will be assessing only part of the entire unit in Geometry, but I will be teaching it in its entirety.  I do not have time to get in the whole unit before term one ends, so we will simply assess what we have done and take our time in learning the rest. This will likely work in your child's favour, as the assessment will be focused and very brief.

Friday  - WOW test, Language Quiz (focus is on plurals again and the use of then and than)

That should do it for this week!

Parents and Campers,
Tonight your child came home with a Social Studies unit test to review, sign and return.  This mark will be averaged with the unit work and craftivities that were completed throughout the unit.  We are also working on a google slide presentation that will also be factored in to your child's final grade.  That being said, we reviewed all of the unit information at length during class time, so I was a little disappointed with some of the results.  Those who consistently engage in class discussions and actively participate tend to do well. However, reviewing material is necessary at this stage in grade 3.  When I send home the duo tangs for review, the expectation is that students read, reread, and review key information with a parent.  It could be done in a quiz format, or practise test, or general Q & A format.  Any review is a good review.

REPORT CARDS:  Report cards will be sent home in a couple of weeks.  That being said, I will be asking for interviews beginning next week so that come interview night, I won't have back-to-back interviews that often rush our meetings. I plan to meet with everyone this term, however, if you are unavailable to meet in person, a phone interview can be arranged.

Hello Parents and Campers!

MATH:  As I mentioned in my last post, this week, we will be hitting on 2 math units:
Geometry of 2D shapes and Measurement with Mass and Capacity.  The measurement mark will be used together with the assessment that was done on Calendar/Time and Temperature.

SOCIAL STUDIES TEST: Wednesday we will have our unit test on the 3 Land Regions in Ontario; The Great Lakes St. Lawrence Lowlands, The Canadian Shield and The Hudson Bay Lowlands.
Please review tonight in your child's green duo tang coming home.

MUSIC TEST: In lieu of a language quiz this Friday, we will be having a Music test.  Campers are to select any song in their Music duo tangs and practise for the test this week.  It can be ANY song of their choice.  Criteria I am looking for when assessing their song on the recorder:

Criteria for Music Test:

  1. Proper sitting position (edge of seat, back straight)
  2. Holding recorder correctly (left hand on top)
  3. Playing the notes correctly (quarter notes, half notes, whole notes)
  4. Tapping foot along to the best while playing
  5. Reading the correct notes to the song.

THRoW:  Campers did a great job of applying bump up strategies in their THRoW this week!  Great strides in improving their reading responses!  Well done, all!  Looking forward to more great responses this week!

Well, that's all for now!

SECRET QUESTION:  How do we SHOW on a shape that it has a pair of parallel sides?

Friday, January 18, 2019

Image result for images of geometric 2d shapesNext week we begin a unit in Math on Geometric 2D shapes AND a mini-unit in Measurement (Mass and Capacity) that will be averaged overall with the last measurement test we had on calendar/time/temperature. This will give the students a chance to bump up their overall mark in measurement for term one report cards. As we are finishing up our unit in Social Studies, I will use this block of time to teach Mass and Capacity.

We are also going to be learning how to create a slide presentation using Google Slides.  We will be creating a 4-slide show presentation on the 3 Land Regions of Ontario.  You will be able to check them out at home in your child's mytools2go account in Camp Wilson google classroom!

Welcome back!!!  I am super excited to return to school after a very enjoyable Christmas break!  I hope you all were able to relax a little and visit with family!  Now, let's begin our second half of grade 3!

CHRISTMAS GIFT:  As you know, my gift to my students for Christmas was any book up to a $6.00 value from a Scholastic Book Club order.  Please take advantage of this and go online to scholastic book clubs canada to order your free book!  Then, send in the book title on the coupon to me so I can ensure each book ordered gets to your child!  I look forward to seeing some interesting books come our way this week!

NEW  HOMEWORK:
This week, I will be sending home a reading response for THRoW.  I have been modelling in class the proper way to answer these types of questions;

HOW TO ACHIEVE A LEVEL 4 IN A
READING RESPONSE:
1. Begin by starting your answer using part of the question.  Ex.  What character trait do you think best describes the main character of the story?
"The character trait that I feel best describes the main character is ..."

2.  Include SPECIFIC EXAMPLES from the story to support your answer.  This is key in grade 3.  Students need to refer to a specific part of the story, state where it is in the story and include it as support for their answer in their response.
Ex.  "The character trait that best describes the main character is courageous.  I think this because in paragraph 4 it says 'despite shaking in his boots and wanting to run away, Marvin took a deep breath and faced his fears.'  This tells me that he had a great deal of courageous to do something that he frightened him so much.

3.  Edit an revise to make sure your answer makes sense.  Use editing checklists at the back of the THRoW duo tang.

I won't overwhelm you all, so that's all for now.  Can't wait to begin the second half of our journey in gr. 3 in CAMP  WILSON!
